We would like to establish a forum or ‘gathering place’ for Nawken people that challenges the way that knowledge about us is created.
Colonial labelling of our people by the Settled community has led to friction and tension over self identification, which has served to divide rather than connect people, issues and communities. Thus, by empowering Nawken ownership over their own identity and avoiding the conflation of Nawken and broader ‘Gypsy’ peoples, we could strengthen our people’s capacity to organise around our shared identity. Using principles of co-production, this forum would be an ever evolving space in which principles of participation, direct democracy and equity would be embedded. This forum could act as a holding place for energy around activism, advocacy, knowledge exchange and creativity focused around cultural rights.
We aim to increase the agency of Nawken people to define what will support their lives and culture
